Day Sixty Five - Random Award
There are the Oscars, Grammy’s, Tony’s, Juno’s… but I think the most underestimated of all of these awards is the coveted, Most Random Award. Today my life became a nominee for said award.
I’ve said it a bunch of times, radio is not a money career. At least not until you’re established. I’m really enjoying my part time gig at the station here in Victoria, but the key word is part time and I gots me some billz y’all! As you may know, I’ve been looking for another part time job to keep the money train coming but it was sort of on the back burner.
Today was my first day off in a week and I was in my pyjamas until noon. However, this is totally acceptable because it was pouring out for a little bit, that makes it an automatic curl-up-on-the-couch-and-watch-the-Price-is-Right-and-Judge-Judy-all-day-day. Then the random started. The phone rang. Okay that’s not that random but wait for it.
I answer and it is a clothing store that both my Dad and I go to for suits and fancy clothes. The woman on the other side of the call was the woman that we both deal with every time we go in. Thinking that my Dad ordered a suit or something I immediately said “My Dad’s not in, can I take a message?” to which she says “Oh no Mitch, I was looking for you.” But how could this be? “I’m so broke there is no way I ordered a suit and I’m not interested in answering a survey, so what’s going on” I thought to myself.
“Well the last time you were in Mitch, you said you were looking for a job, but you said you didn’t want to go back to working for your Dad.”
“Yup, luckily I found a part time job at a radio station here in town working Thursday to Sunday. It’s great” I said happily, but still confused.
“Well I’m calling to basically see if you would be interested in working here?”
“SAY WHHHAAAATTT?” (again… all in my head). I took a second. How the hell does that work? I didn’t apply for this position, haven’t talked to her in a couple months, and I was just coming to terms with having the one job. Then out of the blue someone calls me (unsolicited) and offers me a job. RANDOM!
Of course, I didn’t say no. I said I would like to come and meet with her and get a feel for what the job would be. I did let her know though, that radio is my career and this would be a part time, filler job. She totally understood. So not only am I being offered a job, but she recognizes it’s a filler job and she is totally willing to be flexible. Just what I was looking for. It kind of made me think of a “higher power”. It made me stare up at the ceiling and say “okay, I get it…”. How much of a hint do I need before I come to terms with the whole I-think-it’s-time-for-a-second-job-thing. It’s been handed to me and I’m going to check it out, but talk about random award.
I’m a big believer in “everything happens for a reason” and this seems to fit that bill.
I’ll keep you updated!
-Mitch
