Day Forty Two - Mini-Roadtrip

I spent a day in a car… even better then that… I only went 15 minutes away. It’s the wonders of the summer construction. You think the road construction would be done in the winter/spring time when there is less traffic. I mean, we have such mild seasons here in Victoria, it just makes sense, but NO! That would be logical!

I live in Esquimalt, which is just outside of downtown Victoria and in order to get out of the town there is three options:

1) Left
2) Straight
3) Right

I know this is mind blowing but hold on. The left way is the most convenient and most common way. It leads directly to the highway. Going straight takes a little while longer, less busy, and a bit of a round about way. To the right would be great except it leads downtown… so as I was not going downtown this option was useless. This left me with Left or straight. Hmm.

I thought about going straight up the hill, but using my brain like a fully functioning human being, I remembered that the road I would need to take is being completely torn up and all that fun stuff, which left me no choice but to go left.

I felt pretty good about my choice… not a single other car on the road, happy days… and then I see it. The car backup. My straight line to the highway is completely backed up, but I didn’t panic, I was now in a position to switch lanes and head left to get around whatever was causing the problems… HA! I smirked to myself. I go through the light and then for some reason my lane isn’t moving either. I’m trapped. Not to worry, I thought, I’ll just wait it out.

One light cycle goes by and for some strange reason no one has moved. 5 minutes…. 7 1/2… 10 minutes and I’m only a car length further ahead. Turns out… ALL THREE routes out of town were under heavy construction. WHHHHHHHYYYYYYYY?!

Luckily I had nowhere important to go, but it does make you question the thought process behind our construction people. Sure the work needs to be done… but do all three routes need to be done at the same time?! The answer is NO! No, they do not!

This leads me to the “whole day in the car” thing. Sure it’s a slight exaggeration, but MAN it felt like it was all day. I felt my life slipping through my fingers. I was literally melting in my seat as the construction worker held a “STOP!” sign non-chalantly in front of my face. I was decomposing right in front of her! WHY WASN’T SHE HELPING ME! What kind of woman is she? Heartless! I’m so young, and I’m withering, decaying 5 feet from her reflective vest.

Thank god we started to move… not going to lie after sitting in that much traffic I swear I have the mentality of a sixty year old HAHA!

Once I got through this hair-pulling construction death pit, I took another way to the highway. Much better… until… “WHAT THE!” (If I could add visuals this is where I would but the picture of me driving up to a blocked off street, where cops were turning everyone around). Yup, the only other way to the highway was being blocked off by 3 cops who came up to my window to explain “there’s a situation here, I’m going to need you to turn around… thanks”. *This is where I went to my happy place*

Needless to say I spent over and hour and 15 mins going, what would normally take less then 15 minutes…

ANYWAYS! That was my not-so-exciting day, but I swear now that I have a job in the industry, I will be having a lot more thrilling adventures! Seeing as how I don’t start till Saturday, I’ve been invited to go up island for the day to hang out with my friend and her family at the lake! This will surely be a better car ride! With that said, I probably won’t be able to do a daily post… because of the whole lack-of-a-computer thing. If I have cell coverage I will try to submit a quick something from my iPhone so check my twitter (@mitchhawes) it will let you know!

That’s all I got
