Day Thirty Six - Interview!
WOOT! I got back into the radio game today… by that I mean I actually stepped inside a radio station for the first time since I visited Scott McGregor and the crew at Kool 107.3 on Day Sixteen and it always feels good. Like ice cream on a hot day or ice cream on a mild day, or on a rainy day, even a cold day… basically any day with ice cream!
So if you have been keeping up with blog I have been searching for a radio job (that is kind of the point of this site). ANYWHO! I have been sending out application after application and nothing, I was falling in and out of “The Funk” and ya… it was getting to me a bit. Then I got a call on Monday saying I had an interview for a promotions job at a local station! It was at that moment that the heavens opened up and a chorus of angels floated down, singing “Hallelujah” on repeat! It was quite a sight to see… you kind of had to be there haha.
I grabbed the interview clothes that I have mentioned on numerous occasions (they are nice, I swear), printed off a few things and headed to meet with the promotions director this afternoon. I got there and I have to say it was a very nice interview. I’ve gone through quite a few in my day (makes me sound old… or it makes me sound like I’m always interviewing for a new job… neither are the case), but this one was very relaxed and calm. No panels, no pop quiz just a great conversation, which always makes these things better.
*SIDE STORY ABOUT A RIDICULOUS INTERVIEW - SKIP IF YOU JUST WANT TO HEAR ABOUT TODAY AND THEN COME BACK*
To share with you one of the craziest interviews I have ever had, let me cast your mind back to my grade 12 year. Now, like most people, in high school I truly started to become who I am today. Before high school I was all quiet and shy… when I got to Esquimalt High (REPRESENT!) I was organizing events, doing all the plays and playing twister in the hallways (took up the whole walkway… highly entertaining, and very true!)… where was I?
Right. At the middle/end of my senior year I decided that I should apply to some scholarships because I fit the criteria for a lot of them. My school counsellor told me that I should apply to this one called the Garfield Weston Merit Scholarship. The top award? Two year full tuition plus $2500 bucks for fun, I believe. It was a big deal. Lots of paper work… I thought it was a long shot, until about 3 weeks later when I get a call saying that if I’m free two weeks later they would like to fly me out to Calgary for an interview!
SAY WHAT?!
Naturally I said yes… then it clicked in that I’ve never travelled by myself… let alone fly to another province, then catch a cab for an hour and a half, then stay in the dorms at the University of Calgary with complete strangers for three days! Yes, I was outgoing at high school, but this was overkill!
Needless to say, I arrived in Calgary and got to the dorms and then realized I was spending a long weekend with some of the most ridiculous and motivated young people ever… they were also friendly (thank god!). Getting back to the interviews… it was three days of PANEL INTERVIEWS!
We would all get up and grab some breakfast… then we would all get hauled into this big waiting room where one by one we would be interviewed while the rest schmoozed. When you were done your interview you went back to mingling… THREE DAYS of this. In front of 10 different interviewers. Asking questions like “What would you change in the current government system and why?” and “What would you change in the world?”. Let’s just say I was glad there was A/C!
Needless to say I didn’t get the big scholarship… but I got a long weekend all expense trip to Calgary as well as the 3rd tier prize of $2500 buckeroos! Sounds good to me!
My experience today… A MILLION TIMES better haha!
*RESUME READING HERE TO SKIP THE AWESOME AMAZING STORY THAT YOU CAN COME BACK TO*
Today’s interview went as well as I could expect. A lot of situations (which I was pre-pared for because of yesterday). As I left the interview and was walking back to my car I felt confident that I have a good chance to get this position. I’m up against four others but still confident… I can do this! The best part? There is room for growth! On the same track… don’t you hate when you leave an interview and you think of all the things you forgot to mention… I HATE THAT but what can you do? Haha.
I’m trying not to get my hopes up just in case. However, I’m trying to separate getting my hopes up and being confident (which I am!).
So feel free to send out your positive vibes into the universe for me (like in “The Secret”), or do some voodoo magic or just cross your fingers… I hear that helps too, and I will make sure to let you know as soon as possible (I won’t hear back for a week or two).
Enough of me blabbing, let’s make this an interactive post!
What was your best or worst interview experience? And what was the outcome?
Let me know I want to hear them. If you would rather send it to me in email form… that’s cool too: mitch.hawes@gmail.com!
That’s all I got for today!
Cheers,
-Mitch
