The Power of Social Networking
Let me just preface this post by saying today felt like a movie, and although nothing may come of it, it just goes to show you with directed social networking people might hunt YOU down, and lastly before I continue to recap my great-day-with-a-lesson, I’m going to say once again I LOVE TWITTER!
This morning I had a chitty chat with my Maja (aka Mum) about this blog and how I’m enjoying it and she said “well make sure to really promote it”. So I thought about it for a little bit and this afternoon I decided to make the daily post about radio postings/forums (Click Here for the Post) which included Milkman Unlimited and Airchecker. I was happy with it, and as always I threw the link to the post on my twitter and I decided because, why not, to @reply it to Airchecker and Milkman to let them know that I talked about them…. WELL! That was when the fun started.
Airchecker is truly amazing, I’ll say it again… and no they aren’t paying me to say this. They messaged me over twitter and said “Great read have posted your link. Your frustration is common.” Wait! Did you catch that? “HAVE POSTED YOUR LINK”. They posted the link to my blog on their twitter which let’s see has 2,200 followers in the radio biz…. so this made me really happy, but then it got better….
A couple announcers from Victoria took notice, one of which is leaving his position… (coughhiremecoughcough haha) commenting on my posts and following me on twitter and facebook. Which I have to say it feels good when they follow you! By this point I go out and grab a bite to eat with the family and in the car ride home I get another message from airchecker (don’t worry I’m not driving) and they asked me to send in a bio/pic/demo to be posted on their website where a ton of Program Directors go. By this point the mouth is on the floor and naturally I rush to do it as soon as I pull into the driveway.
The final product… TAADAA! Now if that wasn’t cool enough airchecker then re-tweeted this article… and then the announcer from Alberta that I had sent my stuff to earlier in the week (Day Two) also tweeted the article to her followers! All of this is due to a series of 140 characters or less messages and again the best part, I barely had to lift a finger!
So the lesson is this: There are websites out there that are looking for talent, like Airchecker, who will help young broadcasters like ourselves get noticed… so use them! Who knows what will come of this… but I have to say if I get a job offer on Day 6 of this blog… I might have to re-write the whole “it’s hard to get into the industry” part of this project HAHAHA.
