Day Three - Postings

As you know I have graduated from college with a diploma in radio broadcasting and the point of this blog is to go through my journey to become a broadcaster, but that’s fine to say but what’s the next step. Well finding a job obviously and fortunately for us there are a couple sites that every broadcaster should be keeping up with… think of them like industry newsletters.

There are three websites that I recommend to bookmark or subscribe to their RSS and definitely follow on twitter:

  1. Milkman Unlimited
  2. Puget Sound Radio
  3. Airchecker

Let me elaborate.

Ok so first, Milkman Unlimited. I have no idea why its called milkman… that has nothing to do with radio, but whatever the content is unbelievable, so I’ll forgive them. I can’t say it enough, Milkman is ESSENTIAL! It is an industry standard. Employers can post jobs (which is the main focus) but they can also post updates about their stations (new hires, change in programming etc.). This can work in our favour because if we know they are switching formats they may be looking for new announcers, or if a new station is hitting the air soon they might be looking for people to fill all the positions. Familiarize yourself with Milkman immediately if you aren’t already, because although you can look at Rogers or Jim Pattison’s websites for job postings, all of them will be posted on milkman, which is just so much easier… and who doesn’t like “easier”! Plus all the jobs are Canadian WOOT!

Next there is Puget Sound Radio, which is a forum for the TV/Radio industry. The site has a lot of great articles and discussions regarding the media world. And as I mentioned, being in tune with the changes that are going on around in the biz and what fellow broadcasters are talking about is always helpful for when we work our way up to being Program Directors right?!

Lastly Airchecker. Now I would easily say that Airchecker is a leader in the media forum business. 24/7 they have updates about changes in radio. Who just got hired, who got fired, format changes, new stations, job postings and industry discussions with broadcasters across the country. And seriously, if you don’t have a twitter account, get one just so you can follow Airchecker because as cheesy and cliche as it is, you won’t regret it. I know when I’m on the bus or something I just scroll through their tweets and I feel like I know everything!

So thats my tip for today: Postings and Forums! Read them, read them, read them and as always if you have another website we should check out let me know about it in the comments below!
