Michael Forbes - Morning Show Announcer 98.5 The Ocean
I like to think of myself as a pretty intelligent person. Now, every now and then a good idea just hits me. This one came about like this: “Hmm, how can I get more contributions to the blog?… If only I was surrounded by a vast amount of radio professionals every day… if only”. Light bulb. Yup, it took a while but I finally figured out I should talk to the very same people who work in my building! First up, Michael Forbes, morning show co-host at 98.5 The Ocean.
Michael left the following as a comment, but I wanted to highlight it because there’s a lot of good advice. Plus make sure to read the article he has linked at the bottom for even more background. Take it away:
Hey Mitch,
Great page, good advice from some talented people. I started in this career in 1986 and we were will still playing records! There weren’t a lot of computers available so it was so cool if you could just get your hands on a current USA Today. Technology has changed but the heart of radio never has. It really is the best business to be in….show business! I can’t really share much more advice than what has already been dispensed here but making yourself valuable and being a jack of all trades will get you noticed and get you hired. Although positions are limited these days, small towns have and always will be the best way to earn your stripes. You’ll be respected for it too. If you are on air, please know that no break will ever be perfect but go into them with a clear plan and a solid beginning, middle and end. Discipline is key. If you can’t fit it all in one break you can alway use it later. One more thing… if you are planning on working on air with your wife every morning, keep your mouth shut and do what she says!! If you want to learn more about our journey in the biz, you can read it here.

Thanks Michael for contributing. I think it is a very interesting hearing about what it’s like to be on air with your significant other. At least you always know how you’re getting to work every morning haha.
Thanks again and please make sure to read the article that Michael linked above. It’s great stuff. Also you know I am always open to hearing advice, stories or other opinions on the radio industry. So if you want to chime in, send me an email: share@theradioindustry.com
