Sure Shots: Round Three
Can I just say I love this segment. I know I did something similar with my Top 4… but that was just songs that I liked, songs that may already be on the radio, or may never be, but this blurb lets me share some music with you that I think will be big. I also want to remind you I WANT YOUR OPINIONS! Don’t be shy, throw down a comment, tell me a song you think it going to be big. Or tell me about a song that you predicted would be a #1 and was, I want to hear it. With that said I have some great selections today and even better I think it is fair to say they are all “Unknowns” for the most part.
1. The Drums - Me and the Moon
The alternative sure shot of the week. Now, I said that most of the bands on the list this week were unknowns… these guys are a slight exception. They were featured on MTV Canada for a brief interview, but I’m claiming that this song will get on the air. Their first single “Let’s Go Surfing” could still make it, but I think it is too “pop” and not enough “rock” to make it, if that makes any sense whatsoever. “Me and the Moon” however is a perfect blend. Catchy hook, head bobbing beat and some smooth vocals. Nice.
Countdown to Air: 3-4 Weeks.
2. Jessie J - Do it like a Dude
This is probably my favorite find this week. Jessie J is from the UK and is still waiting for her first single to drop in January 2011, but I can already tell you she basically has Top 40 radio written all over her. From her rockstar/punk/diva image to her rap/hip-hop stylings, Jessie J is a guarantee hit. People are comparing her to a mash-up of Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj and that is a total compliment and accurate, but at the same time just because she has studded black lips in her video does not make her a Gaga wannabe just want to clear that up. Big fan already.
Countdown to Air: Well if I was a music director I would want this single to be on the radio right now! Obviously have to wait for a “radio edit” version, but get on it. I hate when stations have the ability to play it now, but wait until everybody else is playing it. Realistically: 5-6 weeks (around the time her UK single Drops), hopefully way less then that!
3. Black Cards - Club Called Heaven ft. Chiddy
I never thought in a million years I would be helping to promote the latest creation from Pete Wentz, but the reason is… he doesn’t sing and is barely seen in the video. This is Pete’s attempt at a electropop group, post Fall Out Boy days. I’m really digging the old-school vibe of the vocals. They are slightly distorted and sound like they are being played from a classic radio and that’s just pure awesome. The rap bridge (brought to you by Chiddy) usually makes or breaks a song for me, but with this tune it is so fluid it’s almost missed.
Countdown to Air: Again, why wait! I’m giving it 4-5 weeks to get some hype around it, but it could be longer as Pete said on his blog that “there will be no viral campaign” so it’s strictly word of mouth, but hopefully Music Directors read this blog or they are seriously missing out!
That’s it for now. What do you think of Sure Shot: Round Three? If you missed any of my other “Sure Shots” click below and then turn on your radio, because some of them are already being played, to which I can actually say “called it!”.
