Radiotrip: Audio Search! →
radiotrip:
Hey radio peeps (yes, people still say that), how has it been going?! Nice weather? Got to love small talk, right? Do you think there should be some more punctuation in these first couple sentences?
I wanted to post a quick little blurby thing because I am on the hunt for some more audio to post!…
Radiotrip: Catch Up Game! →
radiotrip:
Want to play a game?… That sounds creepy, at least when I read it back in my “serial killer” voice. What? You don’t do that? ANYWAYS! What a crazy couple weeks since getting back from the trip and for me it’s been all about playing the catch up game and I think it is time to bring you back up to…
Radiotrip: Follower Question! →
radiotrip:
I got an email a couple days ago, but due to the overwhelming feeling of clean laundry and my own bed, I semi-sort-of forgot about it. However, in the nature of keeping the trip alive I thought I would take a quick second to answer it.
The question was…
“How did you guys meet if you went to…
Our RadioViz.com Interview! →
radiotrip:
So our little iPhone videos may be quick and easy to do from the road, but this is a legit interview we did with the lovely people from Radioviz.com. We are the feature of the week and if you like what you see, check out the programming section for a couple more clips.
Big thanks to both Bob Magee and Richard Maxwell, it was definitely the most indepth interview we have had! Keep up...

Project: Radio Roadtrip?!
So the name hasn’t been decided yet, but it’s definitely happening. My friend Gabrielle and myself are packing up the car and booking it 4,472 km one way all the way to Toronto (at least). The goal? To make a radio documentary about what it takes for two radio grads to break into the industry… the runner up goal- to get a full time job.
This whole idea spawned from the...

Back to Basics
I can’t remember the last time I updated you all about what’s going on with me in the radio business. The past posts have been all about music, or funny videos I’ve come across, but I think it is time to get back to where this blog started from… my personal journey into the radio business. Let’s catch up…
Where were we? Well, frankly I think the last...

Minor Problemo!
Hey Team,
It’s been awhile, but if you follow me on Twitter (@mitchhawes) you will have heard that my external hard drive crashed… and with it I lost all of my music, SFX and all the other stuff that I had for the blog. However… I am working on rebuilding my library so if you have any music beds, SFX or what not to contribute just let me know. I am hoping to have another audio...

Part ll: Todd Palmer - Promotions Coordinator...
The following post is a continuation from yesterdays article from Todd Palmer, the Promotions Coordinator for Ocean 98.5 and 103.1 JACK FM in Victoria. He has one of the most creative brains out there, so if you haven’t already, make sure to read the first half of his write up which includes a not-so-funny-then-but-funny-now story about an inflatable pig. Click Here to Read Part One.

Todd Palmer - Promotions Coordinator Ocean...
Holy Aunt Josephine! It has been quite a break without some blog posts, however I am back and with a bunch of great stuff for you. One thing that hasn’t been shared for awhile is advice from industry professionals, so let’s start there.
A couple weeks ago Mr. Palmer (my supervisor at JACK FM) sent me this incredible write up as a behind the scenes look at the promotion realm of a...

Sayonara!
MAN!, It’s been a really, really, really long time since I posted anything up here. However, life is getting the better of me and my interweb time has drastically decreased! Tons of stuff to do! I’m leaving for Hawaii tomorrow morning (YAY), but I promised an awesome article from Mr. Todd Palmer all about radio promotions! With that said, I am in full-blown vacation mode and have...

Your Sure Shots
I’m preparing to do another episode of Sure Shots and I have a great line up of songs, but it got me thinking. I love my opinions, but I love others almost as much… almost HA! With that said, if you want to contribute a list or maybe just one track that you think will be a hit soon, send it to me with a little blurb as to why you think it will be a hit and you’ll hear it in an...

Brian Wiebe - Program Director/Morning Show Host:...
I love getting in touch with radio people in positions that I would love to have. One of my great friends from school (you know who you are) recently got a job up in Merritt for on-air and before I knew it I was connected with Brian (her boss), who I actually had the pleasure of meeting when he came to meet our class as we graduated at the annual talent scout. Anywho… I asked Brian to share...

Michael Forbes - Morning Show Announcer 98.5 The...
I like to think of myself as a pretty intelligent person. Now, every now and then a good idea just hits me. This one came about like this: “Hmm, how can I get more contributions to the blog?… If only I was surrounded by a vast amount of radio professionals every day… if only”. Light bulb. Yup, it took a while but I finally figured out I should talk to the very same people...

Holiday Jet-Lag
The holidays always bring that sense of happiness. Family, friends and baked goods, especially baked goods. Of course, with that said it also brings a sense of overwhelming anxiety usually centered around “did I remember everyone on my list?” or more importantly “do I have enough baked goods?”. I hope you had a great holiday season: Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanza, Festivus...

Matt Van Essen: Imaging Producer at Astral Calgary
I have always wanted to get a broader look at the business here on the blog. However, I have focused a lot on on-air talent. Luckily, again through the magic of twitter, I connected with Matt Van Essen. How did it come about? Basically, Matt worked with Ceara K, who contributed to the blog not to long ago, and so I thought it would be cool to follow the naturally forming web and see if Matt wanted...

TheRadioIndustry.Com?!
With the step-by-step guide from a complete, but totally awesome stranger, some cool changes have been made to The Industry. No more tumblr.com. It’s time to get official. Although the old link still works, The Industry can now be read worldwide at:

With that said there are some new addresses for you to make note of:

Sure Shot Round 4 Update
Well, well, well. It looks like another successful round of sure shots. If you haven’t heard the audio countdown from last week, click here then come back and read this update, because I don’t want to brag (okay maybe a bit), but I caught one of the tracks on air this afternoon. Which do you think it was?
David Guetta Ft. Rihanna - Who’s That Chick Flo Rida ft. Akon - Who Dat...

Jonny Staub - Mid-Days on The Beat 94.5
Well, ask and you shall receive! After posting Ceara K’s story on the weekend where she mentioned her friend/ex co-host Jonny Staub I sent out a little tweet to let him know that he was practically famous online (not that he isn’t well known already). He responded and said he would write up his story. How about that? Two contributions in one week, been awhile since that has happened!...

Ceara K. Afternoon Drive - 107.3 Kool FM
As we all know this blog started with me chronicling my journey in and through the radio industry. However, if you flip through some of the previous advice here, I’m clearly in the “paying my dues” phase… which doesn’t make for great reading. But what I always like to read/share are other peoples stories on how they got to where they are and I got another one for...

Midnight Ramble
There have been a lot of things that have come across my mind in the past week or so and although I recognize that I am not even out of my teen years yet, I feel like sometimes I’m way behind. I’ve talked about this before probably at one of my “low points” in this whole “document-your-experience-in-the-radio-industry” project and that is the idea of comparing...

Just a quick note.
Today was a day for two types of nerds. Classic music nerds and your stereotypical nerd-nerds. The classic music nerdgasm came in the form of an Apple announcement. The entire Beatles library is now up on iTunes… yay?! I guess it’s a big deal because there were fights over the rights (yes, a rhyme!), but it’s not like there wasn’t already millions of...

Sure Shots: Round Three
Can I just say I love this segment. I know I did something similar with my Top 4… but that was just songs that I liked, songs that may already be on the radio, or may never be, but this blurb lets me share some music with you that I think will be big. I also want to remind you I WANT YOUR OPINIONS! Don’t be shy, throw down a comment, tell me a song you think it going to be big. Or tell...

Sure Shots: Round Two
Over the past couple days I’ve searched the interwebs for more of my sure shots and this is what I came up with for week two. Remember, you can click on the title, and other song names to hear the song for yourself in a new window. In addition to listing the songs, I’m going to make a bet (yes, I bet with myself so what?) on how long I think it will take for the songs to hit the...

One of Those Good Days
You know those kinds of days where you wake up rested, ready and excited to tackle the day? Well, that was me this morning. I got to sleep in and start work a little later today, but that was only the beginning of the awesomeness that was my Friday October 29th…
I’m still learning that although this blog was started to chronicle my journey in the industry, it has a following. I find...

Sure Shot Success
This is going to be quick but I had to share this little story with you. A couple days ago I blogged my “Sure Shots” or in other words, songs that I believe will be big hits on the radio. I had Kevin Rudolf’s latest as well as Ke$ha’s, The Ting Tings and Marina and the Diamonds and as I was driving home from work and I heard the beginning of a song intro “First with...

The Importance of a Mentor
Teacher, Guide, Go-To Guru and Counsellor are all names for that person in your life that shares a similar passion as you and which you can turn to in times of uncertainty to help steer you on your career path. Of course, you can add parents, siblings and friends to the list as well, but they are not entrenched in the same field and so, although they are just as important (if not more so in most...

Sure Shots...
I have always had a passion for music, however at a young-ish age I realized that my passion wasn’t so much for making music (sorry for wasting your time band teachers) it was for listening to music. Now I like to think of this as more then just a hobby, because eventually one job that I would love to have is the title of Music Director (perhaps in neon lights above my desk… or on a...

It's Coming...
Yes, a re-launch is coming for The Industry and it’s going to be epic. With an emphasis on video, nothing is going to be off limits. Graphics are being finalized and then it’s all gravy, so look out for new posts here on The Industry and look out for The Industry TV coming soon.

Longest Break Ever!
Hey Everyone,
Feel free to slap my wrists because I have officially left this blog for a couple weeks without updating it, tisk tisk on my part.
Like I’ve said in the past posts, my life is so crazy busy right now it’s almost ridiculous. Working two jobs which equals 6 - 6 1/2 days a week, when I do get a moment of free time, I usually pass out on the couch! HOWEVER… I am...
